Position Statement title

What is Evergreen's position on sustainable forestry?

Forestry is by definition sustainable. If what you are seeing is not sustainable, it isn't forestry. This said, simply defining what is sustainable has proven to be highly subjective. For example, people who oppose clearcutting for aesthetic reasons believe its near-term visual impacts equate to a lack of sustainability. But there is no scientific evidence to support this belief. In fact, shade intolerant tree species - especially Douglas fir, regenerate themselves best in full sunlight. As a forest regeneration tool, clearcutting replicates stand replacing fire patterns that have dominated Pacific Northwest forests west of the Cascades for eons, creating ideal habitat for trees that thrive in full sunlight, and wildlife species that depend on forest openings created by clearcutting or natural disturbances.
