NOTE: This issue is no longer available for purchase. "New Revised Oregon Forest Fact Book"
Despite the collapse of the federal timber sale program, Oregon's forest products industry remains one of the most vibrant in the country. On the regulatory front, Oregon continues to lead the nation in its efforts to balance the resource needs of its industry with the needs of Oregonians for whom forests are mainly playgrounds. Be sure to read our interview with Dr. Fred Bunnell, the University of British Columbia forest ecologist that led a team of investigators hired to survey wildlife habitats on Oregon's industrial timberlands. Among their conclusions: No terrestrial vertebrate species in Oregon is immediately threatened by current forest practices. In fact, these intensively managed lands are providing important habitat niches for wildlife species that live and breed in early succession forests. A solid well documented report for anyone interested in learning more about forests and forestry in Evergreen's home state.
